Even with a 3-0 win over Grand Canyon University in Pacific West Conference play, the University of Hawaii at Hilo may have taken some steps backward this late in the season.

“We always want to move forward and not by big leaps and bounds,” said UHH Head Coach Tino Reyes. “We just want to make a little bit of improvements all the time.
“That one there, we didn’t make any improvement.”

Set scores in the UHH gym were 25-16, 25-22, 25-17. The Vulcans improved to 13-3 overall and 8-1 in the PacWest while the Antelopes are 10-13 overall and 5-6 in the conference.

The Antelopes were ahead in two of the three sets before the Vulcans pulled together.

“We just didn’t play as good as we can and maybe GCU had a little bit to do with it,” said Reyes. “But that performance tonight just wouldn’t help us win the league.

Katie Swenson ran an efficient offense with 35 assists. With her 14 team-high kills, Hillary Hurley continues to be the Vulcans’ primary weapon. After Hurley, the trio of Kawena Cubi-Otineru (nine kills), Rachael Thornquist (eight kills) and Leilani Ramsey (seven kills) keep opponents guessing.

“It’s not that everybody on the team didn’t play well … as a group, we didn’t play well,” said Reyes. “There were too many unforced errors. Our serving and passing was sporadic.

“The disappointment was we had some really good practices this week and I thought it was going to be nice … but it wasn’t. Human nature… performance fluctuates and this was one of them.”
