State House candidate forum in Kona (Oct. 19)


The public is invited to a moderated candidate forum for the candidate State House of Representatives for District 7, North Kona/South Kohala, and for District 6, North Kona/Keauhou.

The forum is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, at Kealakehe HIgh School.

Candidates for State House District 7 are incumbent Cindy Evans(D) and Republican challenger Scott Henderson. The candidates for District 6 are incumbent Denny Coffman (D) and Republican challenger Becky Leau.

The evening begins at 5 p.m. with food sales by Tante’s Restaurant as a benefit for Rotary Sunrise and Kealakehe High Culinary Program. They will offer pizza and chef’s salad.

The moderator will be Sherry Bracken, news reporter for Hawaii Public Radio and host of the LAVA 105.3 fm and KKOA 107.7 fm weekly broadcast, Island Issues.

The moderator will pose all questions, and candidates will have a set amount of time in which to answer. Some of the questions will be posed for all candidates, and some will be asked to specific individual candidates only.

Supporters of all candidates are welcome, but there will be no sign waving allowed on the Kealakehe High School campus or inside the forum. Submit questions in advance to, or at the forum.

The League of Women Voters will have a pamphlet available that explains and gives a pro and con view of the Charter Amendments which will be on the Nov. 2 ballot.

Sponsors of the forum include West Hawaii Today, Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce, Kohala Coast Resort Association, Kona Outdoor Circle, Community Enterprises-Kona Town Meetings, Rotary Sunrise and Tante’s Restaurant, Mahalo Broadcasting/LAVA 105.3 FM, Atherton Family Foundation and Kealakehe High School.
