Big Island police have charged a 38-year-old Hilo man with robbery stemming from an incident October 7 at a downtown Hilo bank.

Daniel Alcaraz was arrested late Wednesday afternoon (October 13) after agreeing to meet with detectives. He was charged with second-degree robbery at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Responding to an 11:03 a.m. call on October 7th, South Hilo Patrol officers discovered that a man had entered a bank on Kalākaua Street and passed a teller a note demanding money. A short time later, the suspect left the bank without receiving any money. No one was injured in the incident and no weapon was brandished.

Early in the investigation, police tentatively determined the identity of the suspect. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Section initiated a manhunt but did not locate him immediately.

Alcaraz is being held at the police cellblock in lieu of $5,000 bail pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Thursday afternoon in South Hilo District Court.
