Bond Public Library in Kapaau to close Friday (Oct 15)

Bond Memorial Public Library, located at 54-3903 Akoni Pule Highway in Kapaau on the northern tip of the Big Island, will close its doors to the public for the last time on Friday, October 15 to allow time for staff to relocate the new North Kohala Public Library. The book drop will be permanently closed beginning at 4:00 p.m. on October 15.

The closure will mark the end of more than eighty years of quality library service to Kohala residents. Built on land deeded by Caroline S. Bond in July 1927, the Bond Memorial Public Library was built by the T. Yamane Contracting Company, and opened for service in early 1929.

The library and community will come together to celebrate the transition by hosting the Great Huki Puke or book passing, coordinated by the Friends of Bond Memorial Public Library on Saturday, October 23 beginning at 9 a.m. For more information, email www.hukipuke2010@yahoo.com or visit the website www.hukipuke.com)

The dedication and grand opening of the new North Kohala Public Library will take place on Monday, November 8 at 11 a.m. The new library is located at 54-3645 Akoni Pule Highway. More information on the library’s grand opening will be announced in the coming weeks.

Between October 15 and November 8, as the staff works behind closed doors to prepare for the library’s grand opening, patrons are invited to visit the nearest libraries during normal public service hours for assistance: Thelma Parker Memorial Public Library (at 67-1209 Mamalahoa Highway, telephone 887-6067); Kailua-Kona Public Library (at 75-138 Hualalai Road, telephone 327-4327); or any of the other Big Island public libraries.

In addition, patrons can visit the HSPLS website: www.librarieshawaii.org from their home or office computer to:

  • Browse the HSPLS Catalog for book titles, eBooks, digital audio books, or a wide variety of online databases which provide full-text materials from thousands of magazines, newspapers, journals, and other publications.
  • Get answers to brief informational reference questions by using the “Ask-A-Librarian” E-Reference service: select the “Information” tab, click on “E-Reference” and follow the simple instructions. A library card is not required to use this service.
