Tyrone Vesperas received a life sentence Thursday in Hilo’s Third Circuit Court for a stabbing that left his son dead and seriously injured his estranged, pregnant wife.
Vesperas, 41, received life with the possibility of parole after 25 years for second-degree attempted murder, and 10 years for first-degree assault following the June 11, 2007 incident in Ainaloa. The sentences are to run concurrently.
He pleaded no contest to the charges May 24, and reached a plea agreement that excluded murder charges.
Vesperas, who had been deployed with the National Guard to Iraq, pulled a combat knife on Cheryl-Lyn Vesperas at her home during an argument. Their son, Tyran Vesperas-Saniata, 14, was stabbed in the neck when he tried to intervene.
Cheryl-Lyn Vesperas managed to flee the home, but doctors were unable to save her unborn child.
