Machete attack in Hilo Wednesday evening (Aug 4)

Police were investigating the report of an assault Wednesday evening near Kalakaua Park.

Police could not confirm whether the incident occurred at the park or whether the weapon was a machete. They did confirm they are continuing to investigate the incident as an assault.

A witness said he saw a young man with a gash on his left arm walking along the street. The witness said the man said he was attacked by another man with a machete and then the victim continued walking down the street.

Big Island police are investigating a reported assault Wednesday night (August 4) in Hilo.

Responding to a 6:22 p.m. report of a man bleeding from the hand area on Keawe Street, South Hilo Patrol officers were initially unable to locate the victim but later found him at a home on Wainaku Street.

The 21-year-old victim reported that while he was at Kalākaua Park, unknown men attacked him and one struck him in the arm with a machete. The victim was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was treated and released for his injuries.

The investigation is continuing.
