Queen Kaahumanu Hwy open to traffic, Puako Beach Drive re-opens after greenwaste fire

MEDIA RELEASE from Hawaii County Police (8:30 p.m.)

AVOID Puako Rd./Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. Intersection for the next 2 hours (till 10:30 p.m.) due to brush fire incident.

Hawaii Police Department advises you to AVOID the Queen Kaahumanu Hwy./Puako Rd. intersection due to a brush fire.

A brush fire on the north side of Puako Beach Drive has closed the road up to the Transfer Station. and will require a detour of traffic for the next 2 hours.

Traffic can still use the old Puako Road and also the Mauna Lani access.

UPDATE (9:30 p.m.): AVOID Queen Kaahumanu Hwy./Puako Drive for the next 8 hours due to a brush fire.

The brush fire situated on the north side of Puako Drive although contained continues to burn prompting the earlier road closure to be extended for the next 8 hours while fire units try to extinguish the burning green waste in the area.

Access to Puako can be made via the Old Puako Rd. from the Hapuna Beach area or via the Mauna Lani access.

UPDATE (9:45 p.m.): Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. remains open.

A brush fire nearby has prompted the closure on Puako Beach Drive from the intersection with Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. to the Puako Transfer Station.

Traffic may access Puako via the old Puako Road from the Hapuna Beach side or via the Mauna Lani access.

Once again this closure is expected to last for the next 8 hours or until HFD units extinguish the fire.

UPDATE (10:45 p.m.): The road closure between the intersection of Puako Drive/Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. and the Puako Transfer is open.
