HTFG meetings in Kona, Hilo (July 19, July 27)

The next meeting of the West Hawaii chapter of Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers is Monday, July 19 at the University of Hawaii experiment Station in Kainaliu across from Aloha Theater. The meeting is 7-9 p.m. and non-members are welcome to attend.

Ben Discoe will speak on “Biochar for Hawaii: Healthy Soil, Less Inputs” Discoe is a sustainable agriculture consultant and tea/food farmer. He contends he was organically grown in Hamakua.

Bring fruit for sharing.

* Fruit Fly Control in Hawaii

The East Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers are sponsoring an educational evening Tuesday, July 27 at the Komohana Extension Complex 6:30-9 p.m.

Dr. Ronald Mau, recently retired from CTHAR, and Dr. Roger Vargas, USDA, will be featured speakers. Mau and Vargas have received numerous awards for their collaborative research on the Hawaii Area-Wide Fruit Fly Management Program. A video entitled Fruit Fly Control in Hawaii will also be presented.

The public is invited to attend, admission is free, pupus and beverages will be provided.
