Beginning July 12, 2010, the Pāhoa Recycling and Transfer Station will be under construction.

The County of Hawai`i Department of Environmental Management is working with Willocks Construction Corp. to completely rebuild and enhance the existing facility. Cost of the construction contract for the project is $3.9 million.

The facility will demonstrate green systems such as solar electricity and rainwater harvesting while providing enhanced recycling, reuse and educational services. The improvements are designed to meet the needs of the growing Pāhoa community.

The project includes three new covered refuse chutes, covered and recessed recycling bins, a small reuse structure and a location for recycling certain hazardous items such as CFL light bulbs, motor oil and batteries. The whole area will be landscaped and repaved to eliminate hazards, improve traffic flow and to promote cleanliness and pride in the new recycling and transfer station.

The County will provide continuous service at the site with only minor interruptions during the construction period. The community is encouraged to continue to use the facility and note the progress of construction. When visiting the site, please be cautious and patient as increased congestion is anticipated during construction. Please follow the direction of staff as the location of various services will be rearranged throughout the construction project.

The project is scheduled for completion by the end of April 2011. For more information, please contact the project manager, Terin Gloor, at 961-8058 or tgloor@co.hawaii.hi.us
