Fast moving grass fire in Ka‘u burns 40 acres Sunday (July 4)

Firefighters responded to a fast moving grass fire at 6:30 p.m. Sunday (July 4) on Cane Haul Road in Ka‘u.

The fire grew from two acres, when the firefighters arrived, to 40 acres by the time it was put out. Hawaii County firefighters were joined by National Park Service firefighters to fight the blaze and the services of a bulldozer and backhoe to cut fire breaks.

Crews had the fire out at 8:17 p.m. and were back in quarters by 11: 10 p.m.

It was unknown what caused the fire and there were no reported road closures, injuries or loss of property.
