Fire causes major damage to Hilo home

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 12:47 p.m. alarm for a house fire on Kukuau Street near the intersection with Ilima Lane in Hilo Saturday (July 3).

Crews found a single family home 60% engulfed in flames. Nobody was home at the time and most of the fire damage was to the kitchen, living room with flames also spreading to the carport, laundry room and bathroom. The bedrooms suffered smoke and heat damage. A vehicle in the carport was saved by a neighbor before firefighters arrived at the scene.

The estimated damage to the home was $150,000. There were no roadblocks and no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
