MEDIA RELEASE

A fireworks burst creates a star over Hilo Bay.

The County of Hawaii in collaboration with the State of Hawaii and private organizations are coordinating efforts for this year’s Fourth of July Celebration. The “2010 Hilo Bay Blast” will feature activities for families throughout the day at the Hilo Bayfront areas. Festivities will begin at 10 a.m. and will end with the traditional Lehua Jaycees Fireworks Exhibition.

Mass Transit will provide a free shuttle service to various activity sites from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Parking will be available at the Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium and the Hawaii County Aupuni Center.

For the third year, contestants in the Hilo Bay Cook-off will fire up their grills in the Hilo Bayfront Commuter Parking lot adjacent to the Mo’oheau Ball Field.

Competitions in BBQ beef, chicken, pork, brisket and chili will highlight the event. Judging will take place on July 4 and awards are given to the winners in three places. This event is coordinated by Rick Fredricks. To become a contestant, contact Rick at 935-1860. Spaces are limited.

The “Hot Rides Expo” starts at 10 a.m. and will run until 5 p.m. in the mauka soccer field on Kamehameha Avenue. On display will be show motorcycles, classic hot rods, Volkswagens and drag racing vehicles courtesy of the Volkswagen Club, Hawaii Classic Cruisers, and Big Island Auto Club.

Highlighting the entertainment stage at the Expo will be Esther Zamora, Epicenter, Out of Nowhere, Razz and Ol’ School. Sound and technical assistance will be provided by Pepe Romero of CJ Productions.

The Mo’oheau Baseball Field will be home to various children’s games and contests courtesy of the Recreation Division. In addition, a Waterslide will be on hand to keep things cool. The Bandstand will feature various interactive activities such as Zumba, Line Dancing and special performances by local musicians.

The Bayfront Highway will be closed from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on July 4 to allow for access onto the Bayfront shore for fireworks viewing. Gates at the Mo’oheau Bus Terminal, Mo’oheau Park and Ball Field will be opened for easy access onto the Bayfront Highway.

The Hawaii County Band is set to perform its 4th of July Concert in the Bandstand at 7 p.m. This concert is performed in synchronized coordination with the Lehua Jaycees Fireworks Exhibition.

The County of Hawaii invites the public to attend this alcohol-, drug- and litter-free event coordinated in collaboration with private enterprise, community organizations and the State of Hawaii. We thank the many community and government agencies that have worked cooperatively every year to make the Fourth of July celebration a safe and enjoyable event for all.
