Hilo Library hosts ‘Okinawan Dance’ lecture & demonstration Saturday (June 12)

The Jimpu Kai USA, Kin Ryosho Ryukyu Geino Kenkyusho, Performing Arts Academy will present “Okinawan Dance,” a free lecture-demonstration program at Hilo Public Library on Saturday, June 12 at 11 a.m. The program will be conducted on the Library lanai.

Sensei Cheryl Yoshi Nakasone will lead a dance troupe from Jimpu Kai USA, Kin Ryosho Ryukyu Geino Kenkyusho, Performing Arts Academy as they introduce and demonstrate the dances, music and culture of Okinawa.

Sensei Nakasone began training and performing Okinawan dances in Honolulu at an early age. Nakasone graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and continued her studies in Okinawa under the guidance of Ryosho Kin, designated by the Japanese Government as a National Living Treasure.

The one-hour program is suitable for all ages and sponsored in part by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through funding from the Hawaii State Legislature, and by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Contact the Library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.
