Police charge Mountain View man in stabbing death of wife

Detectives from the Hawai’i Police Department’s Area I Criminal Investigations Section charged a 47-year-old Mountain View man Sunday (May 30) in connection with the stabbing death of his wife in the early evening hours of Saturday (May 29).

Responding to a 6:23 p.m. call Saturday of an affray on Kamehamehea Avenue, South Hilo patrol officers determined that a woman had been stabbed several times.

The suspect was identified as Steve Dingle of Mountain View.

The victim, identified as 38-year-old Catherine Dingle, also of Mountain View, was taken to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition. She expired after emergency surgery and was pronounced dead at 1:05 a.m. Sunday.

The victim and suspect are husband and wife. No motive has been established.

Steve Dingle was charged with second-degree murder. His bail was set at $1,000,000. He is being held at the Hilo Police cellblock pending his initial court appearance.

    Looked like he was dressed in his work uniform. I'm wondering if something bad happened to him at work which raised his anger level enough to do this unbelievably horrible thing.

    Why was he carrying such a huge knife?

    I can't even imagine how out of control someone has to be to do something like that.

    And she had four kids.
