Two rescued from capsized boat north of Hilo

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 10 a.m. alarm Monday (May 31) for a capsized 16-18 foot catamaran style boat offshore the Papaikou/Onomea area north of Hilo.

Rescue Chopper One spotted two people hanging onto the hull of the overturned vessel five miles offshore. The fire department rescue boat was dispatched to the scene and brought the people back to Hilo Harbor. The vessel was reported to be unsalvageable at a loss of $5,000.

The boaters were uninjured in the event according to the fire dispatch report.
