Top Hawaii baby names for 2009: Isabella and Ethan

The numbers are in and it looks like Isabella and Ethan are the winners. Those are the most common baby names in Hawaii for 2009, according to the Social Security’s books.

Hawaii’s top girls’ names and the total number for 2009:
1. Isabella (81)
2. Sophia (65)
3. Mia (50)
4. Ava (48)
5. Chloe (45)

In California, Isabella was also the most popular moniker, with 3,127 making their debut. And it was the top choice in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Okalhoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming.

Hawaii’s top boys’ names and the total number for 2009:
1) Ethan (85)
2) Noah (76)
3) Jayden (64)
4) Joshua (63)
5) Elijah (61)

Ethan also topped the list in Indiana, Kansas, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah and Wisconsin. Indiana has the most new baby Ethans with 493.

According to the Social Security register, exactly 4,097,878 babies were born last year in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. That’s down from 4,242,496 in 2008, but that’s still a lot of diapers to change!
