A 23-year-old Captain Cook woman apparently drowned Tuesday while swimming in waters off Keei Beach in Captain Cook.

The victim has been identified as Karly A. Kojimoto.

Kona patrol officers responded to a 6 p.m. report of a possible drowning and learned that bystanders had heard the victim calling for help, towed her to shore and attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Fire Department personnel continued to try to revive her. They took her to Kona Community Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 7:24 p.m.

According to her Facebook page, Kojimoto was a filmmaker, movie editor and special effects artist. She studied digital media and graduated last year from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.

She also was an avid surfer, who enjoyed the beach and marine life.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 6:03 p.m. alarm for a drowning at Keei Beach in Honaunau Tuesday (May 4).

Upon arrival crews found bystanders performing CPR on a 23 year-old woman on the rocky shoreline. Fire dispatch reported that the woman was a drowning victim.

Medics took over CPR and transported the victim to Kona Community Hospital.
