HPA Summer Basketball Camp this summer (June 7-11)

WAIMEA, Island of Hawaii—Hawaii Preparatory Academy will offer a summer basketball day camp for rising sixth through ninth grade students June 7-11 at the school’s Castle Gym. The camp will run from 1 to 4 p.m. There is a $65 fee for the camp, which includes a camp basketball.

HPA basketball coaches Dave Huntington and Fred Wawner will lead the camp, which will focus on individual skill development, footwork fundamentals, and team and in-game instruction in a fun atmosphere.

Huntington, who played basketball at the University of Massachusetts—Lowell and Valley State University in Michigan, has extensive basketball camp experience ranging from grade school to the college levels. He coached his Michigan high school teams to two league championships and one division championship.

Wawner coached the Virginia Independent School (VIS) state championship team in 2008-2009 and was named VIS Coach of the Year. He is a four-time Virginia Independent Conference (VIC) Coach of the Year. His teams took six VIC championships and made eight state tournament appearances from 2000 to 2008. Wawner also coached five Virginia State Player of the Year Award Winners. More than 20 of his former players have gone on to successful careers at the college level, some at the top basketball programs in the country.
