Donkey Mill Art Center celebrates Earth Day (April 23-24)

MEDIA RELEASE

You don’t have to be a kid to have fun this Earth Day! Preparations are underway at the Donkey Mill Art Center for the 5th annual Children’s Art Exhibition on Friday, April 23 and Spring Art Festival on Saturday, April 24. Both events are designed for the entire family and take place at the Donkey Mill Art Center in Holualoa.

The 5th annual Children’s Art Exhibition is 5:30-8 p.m. Friday, April 23. The children’s work will center around the theme of collaborating with nature and addressing the environment through observation and self-awareness.

Instructors Gerald Lucena, Miho Morinoue, Tomo Nakazato, Janny Pruden and Yarrow Lutz along with their students from Holualoa Elementary School and Donkey Mill Art Center’s After School programs, have worked together to actively construct a rich understanding of our world through the creative process and strive to create a fun and inspiring work environment.

Students will learn about communication, respect, culture, and environment next to basic color theory and design. There will be student presentations, award ceremony and fun activities for the whole family including: “Operation Paydirt,” origami and “Draw Me Donkey.”

A silent auction will be held during the exhibition with proceeds benefiting youth programs. Admission is free.

Bring the family for a fun-filled day of art making at the Spring Art Festival 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 24.

Many hands-on projects will incorporate earth-friendly materials to inspire. Get fired up with raku or bring a T-shirt for silkscreen printing. Other featured activities and workshops include printmaking, origami, papermaking, mixed media, lauhala weaving, ceramics, drawing, painting, and found object 3D.

Unique art displays will figure prominently while a ukulele concert will provide the entertainment backdrop to the day.

Admission is $6 (non-members) and $5 (members); children under 12 years are free.

The mission of the Holualoa Foundation for Arts and Culture believes that art education enriches the lives of persons of all ages and abilities. Its vision is to provide a stimulating environment that helps individuals discover, develop, and expand their artistic abilities.

The Holualoa Foundation for Arts and Culture was established in 1994 by a diverse group of individuals who shared a vision to develop and expand opportunities in the community to enrich lives through art and culture. In 2001, the Foundation renovated the old Donkey Mill steeped in the history of Kona coffee and re-opened in 2002 as the Donkey Mill Art Center.

As the foundation grew, it brought new programs to the community, implementing an ‘Artist in Residence’ program and adding studios for ceramics and printmaking. Its gallery provides a venue for faculty and children exhibitions, features music and dance performances plus a wide range of art and cultural events.
