Updated: Man killed in motorcycle crash at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Friday (April 16) identified

HAWAII NATIONAL PARK, Hawai‘i — On Friday, April 16, at approximately 10:30 p.m., National Park Rangers responded to a single motorcycle accident at mile marker 32 on Highway 11. Visitors driving by called 911 after seeing an individual lying on the side of the road. Upon arriving, park rangers found 47 year old Robert D. Schommer of Hawai‘i Island dead on scene. He was wearing a helmet and traveling toward Hilo.

An investigation into this accident is being conducted by the National Park Service.

Hawai‘i County Fire and Rescue and the Hawai‘i Police Department assisted the park with this incident.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 10:22 p.m. alarm Friday (April 16) for a motorcycle crash on Highway 11 near the 32 mile marker in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Crews found a man, approximately 40-50 years-old, dead and lying on the roadway about 50 feet from his motorcycle.

There were no witnesses to the crash, the roadway was clear and it was reported that it appeared the man was headed to Hilo. The man was wearing a helmet and the crash is under investigation by Hawaii Volcanoes National Park rangers.
