UH-Hilo splits double header against HPU Saturday (April 17)

The long-running rivalry between the University of Hawaii at Hilo and 2nd-ranked Hawaii Pacific University continued with a doubleheader Pacific West Conference split on the UHH Softball Field.

The Vulcans were shutout 2-0 in game one and came back from a 3-0 deficit to win the second game 4-3.

The Vulcans are 30-13 overall and 18-8 in the PacWest while the Sea Warriors are 36-5 overall and 21-3 in the PacWest.

After the Sea Warriors jumped on Vulcan starter Christine Pedroza for three runs on five hits and a walk in the second game’s first inning, the junior proceeded to hold batters to just three baserunners the rest of the way.

She helped her own cause in the first. With no outs and the bases loaded, she snagged a line-drive at her feet and caught the firstbase runner in the double play.

Nicole Alconcel also turned in a defensive gem with a diving snag of a line-drive and tossing out the runner at first base from her knees to end the fifth inning.

The Vulcans got on the board on Alconcel’s single in the second. Dana Lee’s two-run 4th-inning single tied the game.

Sarah Weisskopf drove in the game winner in the fifth. Amanda Tellez led off with her fourth single of the day. Following Tessa Truong’s sacrifice bunt, Weisskopf drove the first pitch she saw to the left center field fence to drive in Tellez.

Both Tellez and Alconcel recorded two hits in the game.

Amber Waracka faced off against HPU ace Sherise Musquiz and nearly went pitch-for-pitch. Waracka gave up just five hits and two walks but struck out four. Her counterpart gave up four hits and a walk and struck out three.

“We were just hitting the ball at people,” said interim head coach Fred Entilla. “That’s just the way the percentages are.”

Tellez paired hits for the Vulcans.
