The University of Hawaii at Hilo split today’s Pacific West Conference doubleheader with Grand Canyon University at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Vulcans (6-17 overall, 2-12 PacWest) fell 5-0 in the first game then came back to beat the Antelopes (19-16, 10-8) in the nightcap 7-4.
A struggling offense showed in the first game as the Vulcans got to Antelope hurler Jeff Urlaub for just five hits. The Vulcans countered with Kekoa Lee and Kurtis Sherer. The duo gave up eight hits and six walks while striking out four.
Ronel Trias went 3 for 4 and Cody Barrett was 2 for 3 to get the offense going in the second game.
Tied a 1-1, the Vulcans took advantage of two fifth-inning Antelope errors to take a 6-1 lead.
John Holley gave up eight hits and struck out seven for the win. Tyler Simao was given the save.
