MEDIA RELEASE
The Big Island is an exotic haven that nurtures creativity and The Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii taps this wellspring of talent by partnering with the Pacific Island Printmakers to showcase Sue Mailander’s newest exhibit “Sue Mailander: Then and Now†in the Luana Lounge Art Gallery on Thursday, March 25, 2010 with an artist’s reception 5:30-7 p.m.
The second quarterly showing will feature the semi-abstract, colorful paintings, woodcut prints and collages of Kailua-Kona Artist Sue Mailander. Her elaborate woodcuts are traditional in size and presentation, but she moves beyond convention, embellishing the surfaces with shining embroidery, beads and paint droplets, giving the viewer an illusion of a rainy day in one piece or sun rays in another.
Mailander also takes inspiration from Hawaiiian quilting and Japanese sashiko and with these additions each impression becomes a one-of-a-kind print or collage.
Mailander is a 20 year member of Kailua Village Artists, a member of newly formed co-op, the Blue Sea Artisans and a founding member of Pacific Island Printmakers. Her work is shown at the Honolulu Printmakers juried annual exhibits and is in collections from West to East.
