Governor Lingle talks about Hawaii’s 6.9% unemployment rate

MEDIA RELEASE

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle issued the following statement today following the release of the latest unemployment numbers, which showed that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January 2010 was 6.9 percent, a 0.1 percentage point increase over December’s revised rate of 6.8 percent. The number of unemployed people in Hawai‘i in January 2010 was 43,450, compared to 38,400 in January 2009.

“With many of our residents out of work, it is critical that the Legislature pass immediate and meaningful legislation that will help private businesses create and retain jobs. My Administration has proposed comprehensive legislation to encourage businesses to hire new employees, including providing tax credits for the creation of new jobs and developing ‘green’ jobs through Hawai‘i Clean Energy Investment bonds to finance energy efficiency projects.

“At the same time, I have directed my cabinet to move forward on job creation programs that do not require legislation. These include Hawai‘i Premium Plus, which would reimburse employers for the cost of health care premiums for new hires, as well as the Volunteer Internship Program that would allow people on unemployment to work for or volunteer their time with a prospective employer.”

    Aloha,
Why is it that states like Hawaii that don`t reach a certain percentage of jobless people don`t quality for extensions? That is just plain wrong and evil, we are all Americans no matter what state you live in. Being jobless IS BEING JOBLESS, and we all are just as needy as someone say in Michigan that is set for 99 week extension. It is only gonna get worse in even the lower unemployed states. They should look at it as Americans unemployed and in need of help rather then go by each states numbers that I don`t believe are correctly counted anyway it is much higher now in March and gonna get higher I fear. Americans are suffering and money is being spent on stupid things While Americans that worked hard all their lives are loosing everything they have worked for and paid into the system that is letting them down now in time of need! The media is all healthcare healthcare healthcare, and MSNBC, CBS,NBC,ABC AND THE LIKE, is what actor came out of the closet, or who is the hottest actress of the year, smoke and mirrors. WHAT THE HELL ABOUT THE BLUE BLOOD AMERICANS THAT CAN`T GET HELP, WHILE GOVERNMENT DRAGS THEIR FEET. I bet there has been more then one heart attack, or ER vist due to this stress. Just pass the 99 week bill for (((ALL))) UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS no matter what state they live in! I believe our lovely paradise will turn into hell as more people become unemployed and loose their homes, cars, lives, and pitch tents on the beaches all over the islands because we can’t get EUI!!!
    Just my humble opinion!

    God Bless

Why is only Oahu unemployment rate only used as a record.

Need to include the unemployed people on other islands to get the true unemployment rate for Hawaii.

6% on Oahu, up seven tenths from December

8.8% in Maui County, up one tenth

9.1% on Kauai, up four tenths

9.9% on the Big Island, up four tenths.

15% Molokai unemployment soared more than three full percentage points
