BOYS & GIRLS CLUB BIG ISLAND ALL-STAR BASKETBALL CLASSIC

HILO, HAWAII MARCH 4, 2010: The boys version of the Boys & Girls Club Big Island Basketball Classic is set for Saturday, March 13th 5p Rising Stars game and 6:30p Senior game at the Hilo Civic Auditorium. The Classic, a collaboration with the County of Hawaii Parks & Recreation, will include a creative set of underage drinking teen programming which will be conducted at the Club during the day Saturday, March 13th from 10a to 2p with both high school boys and girls all-star teams participating. There will be a teen dance immediately following the games at the Civic for all teenagers ages 14 to 18.

The Club’s teen initiative includes a strong commitment to our community’s underage drinking problems and with the help of the County of Hawaii will take the all-stars through a group of anti-alcohol activities to show them the ill effects of underage drinking. This will not just be a game according to organizers as each participant will be required to participate in Boys & Girls Club leadership, anti-tobacco, anti-alcohol, and anti-drug messaging with our SmartMoves programming. Along with the club’s teen initiative and national branding campaign BE GREAT, the game will be an avenue to influence the future leaders of our community with positive messaging and to give exposure to our student/athletes and encourage younger kids to aspire and dream to BE GREAT !!

The girls all-star games will be the night before, Friday, March 12th 6p Rising Stars game and 7:30p Senior game at the Hilo Civic Auditorium. Admission to the games for each night will be $3 for adults and $1 for students and seniors. All proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of the Big Island and concessions will be available and benefit the club’s Hoop Dreams Hawaii travel teams.
