UH-Hilo joins global effort to stop violence against women (Feb. 26)

MEDIA RELEASE

On Friday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 pm, V-Day University of Hawaii at Hilo presents a one-night only benefit performance of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play “The Vagina Monologues” at the University’s Performing Arts Center.

Last year, more than 4,200 communities hosted V-Day benefits around the world to raise funds and awareness toward ending violence against women. These events raised more than $4 million through performances of “The Vagina Monologues” and other V-Day productions.

For the sixth year in a row, UH Hilo has joined this global movement as part of the V-Day 2010 College Campaign. V-Day is a catalyst for mobilizing women and men to heighten awareness about violence against women and girls.

By creating this global community, V-Day strives to empower women to find their collective voices and demand an end to the violence that affects one in three women in the U.S and around the world.

Hailed by The New York Times as “funny” and “poignant” and by the Daily News as “intelligent” and “courageous,” “The Vagina Monologues,” which was first performed off-Broadway by Ensler, dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women’s experiences. Ensler has performed the play to great acclaim throughout the world — from Zagreb to Santa Barbara, from London to Seattle, from Jerusalem to Oklahoma City.

The production helps support women locally and globally. Ten percent of the proceeds will be donated to a local non-profit organization that helps support women in need. Over the last few years, more than $10,000 has been raised to help local agencies such as the Hale Ohana Spouse Abuse Shelter, Turning Point for Families, and the SARAH Foundation.

An additional 10 percent will go to support women in the Democratic Republic of Congo, this year’s selectee for the “global spotlight.” The remaining proceeds will go to the UH-Hilo Women’s Center to support its ongoing mission to offer educational programs to prevent violence against women and advocate for gender equity and equality.

“The Vagina Monologues” is primarily a student-produced and student-acted production. This year’s production will be directed by Justine Thompson and produced by Hannah Lipman, with the support of the UH Hilo Women’s Center. All of the actors, director, and producer are volunteers.

Tickets may be purchased by calling the Performing Arts Center Box Office at 974-7310 or online at http://artcenter.uhh.hawaii.edu. They may also be purchased at the UH Hilo Women’s Center, Basically Books, CD Wizard, or from any of the actors. Ticket prices are $12 adults and $7 for students and seniors.
