Bamboo forest burns in Wainaku fire Saturday (Feb 20)

MEDIA RELEASE

Firefighters responded to a brushfire just before noon Saturday (Feb 20) mauka of Clem Akina Park on Wainaku Street in Hilo.

Crews found a fire involving an acre of bamboo forest. Firefighters had the fire under control in an hour and out at 2:30 p.m.

There were no injuries reported and no roadways blocked. The cause of the fire is unknown.

    It was a crazy sight! I was attending the Bat Boy auditions at 1:30 and the helicopter was circling right there filling buckets of water! Flames were high, but the Fire Dept got it out fast and we were able to hold auditions at the Community Center in Wainaku. The police did divert traffic for an hour or so to keep the park area clear.
