The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s defense stepped up as they held on for a 62-59 win over Dominican University in a Pacific West Conference game in the UHH gymnasium.

The Vulcans are 13-7 overall and 7-3 in the PacWest while the Penguins are 7-13 overall and 4-5 in the PacWest.

“They are a very tough, scrappy team and have had a great trip,” said UHH head coach Jeff Law. “Defensively we did a pretty decent job. It was a physical game and had that type of flow to it.

“We were prepared for everything they were going to do. Tonight we just didn’t get it done on the offensive side.”

The Vulcans held the Penguins to 41.5 percent shooting (22-53) while they struggled at 42.3 percent (22-52). The Vulcans also were 1 of 2 from 3-point range and 17 of 23 from the charity stripe.

Andrew Gipson posted 17 points on 11-of-12 free throw shooting and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Justin Smith tallied 20 points while Zachary Wilde added 10.
