Freethrows in the final two minutes gave the University of Hawaii at Hilo an 83-72 win over Dominican University in a Pacific West Conference game in the UHH gymnasium.
The Lady Vulcans are 7-14 overall and 4-6 in the PacWest while the Penguins are 5-15 overall and 2-7 in the PacWest.
After a 3-pointer pulled the Penguins within three points, the Vulcans hit 11 of 12 freethrows in the final two minutes.
“I thought our kids held our composure tonight,” said UHH head coach Daphne Honma. “We played well enough to win. They shot awesome from the free throw line which is a plus.”
“We knew we had to protect the ball and take care of business. We could not give them any 3-point shots and in the end we defended it enough to win the game.”
Kirsty Imai led the Vulcans with 17 points and seven rebounds. Natalie Mata added 16 points and eight rebounds while Hina Kimitete added 14 points and Hotia Vaaimamao had 12 points.
