NHCH, QHR sever relationship

MEDIA RELEASE

North Hawaii Community Hospital Chief Executive Officer John White has announced NHCH will not continue its management consulting relationship with Quorum Health Resources (QHR) effective April 1, 2010.

NHCH and QHR are working on a plan that will ensure a smooth transition. A successor company to QHR is not being considered at this time.

Adventist Health managed the hospital from its inception in 1996 through 2007. QHR assumed management responsibility in 2008, providing the CEO and CFO positions along with purchasing, billing, and health care facilities expertise.

Management companies like Adventist Health and QHR are present in many small, rural facilities like NHCH.

Over the past two years, the value of working with a management company diminished. In late 2008 the Board was restructured and both the CEO and CFO are now employed directly by the hospital, providing strong, local leadership at both the governance and executive levels.

Quorum Health Resources provided a great deal of assistance to NHCH over 2008 and 2009, advising on the reorganization and improvement of our billing and collection operations and providing pricing discounts on supplies purchased through its general purchasing organization.

QHR consultants also assisted the management team in analyzing and improving quality and overall productivity in the Hospital. NHCH, now with its own CEO and CFO, expects that it can manage the hospital without the support of a management company.

White said, “QHR is a good company with good people who have helped us and many other hospitals around the country. We thank them for their hard work and assistance.”

North Hawaii Community Hospital is a 39‐bed, full service, acute care hospital in Waimea. The hospital opened in May 1996 and serves the residents of and visitors to the Big Island.
