Waiakea Warriors defeat the Vikings in basketball

Thursday’s (Jan 28) game between the Hilo Vikings and the visiting Waiakea Warriors was everything a battle for first place should be.

From the first whistle to the final buzzer, the game was fast paced, intense, and full of action. While Waiakea led for most of the game, Hilo fought hard and tied it up in the fourth quarter. The lead was traded back and forth with neither team succeeding in building a lead.

The lead changed three times in the final minute of the game, and the Civic Auditorium shook with the sounds of the fans cheering on their teams. In the end, Waiakea held onto their lead and took the game, 51-48.

Hilo’s high scorers were Scotty Wong with 13 points, Dustin Leong with 12 and Dakota Allen with 9. Waiakea’s high scorers were Joey Pacheco with 11 points, Clayton Morante with 10, and Matt Libao and Isaak Janado with 9 each.

In JV action, Waiakea defeated Hilo, 60-51.
