Good afternoon this is Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira with a brush fire update for Sunday January 24 at 4:00 p.m.
Very little change has been reported over the past 24 hours on the Kealakekua Mauka brush fire in the Kona area. Fire crews were on scene throughout last night and continued with mop up operations today. All burning and smoldering hot spots continue to remain well within the fire area. Some of these hot spots are estimated to be approximately one-quarter mile from the perimeter and in areas difficult to access.
The fire breaks remain secure and the wind conditions on the fire scene have been light at approximately 6 mph. Resources presently on scene and engaged in the mop-up include 3 brush trucks and 1 tanker. The operations are being performed by personnel of the Hawaii Fire Department and Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate.
Again, there has been little change with the Kealakekua Mauka brush fire and the fire conditions remain stable and limited to remote smoldering hot spots well within the perimeter. Fire crews will remain on scene throughout the night and continue operations tomorrow.
