Kealakekua forest fire update (Jan. 21)

Good afternoon. This is Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira with a brush fire update for Thursday, Jan. 21 at 4 p.m.

The conditions on the Kealakekua Mauka brush fire continue to be stable and limited to hot spots and smoldering fires. All fire activity and burning is occurring well within the fire area and the perimeter remains secure.

Due to the involvement of large logs and fallen trees many of these inaccessible smoldering fires may continue to burn for some time. Crews are maintaining all mop-up operations as well as routine patrols and monitoring the fire breaks and perimeter.

Operations are being performed by personnel of the Hawaii Fire Department, Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate and Forest Solutions. Again, the fire operations on the Kealakekua Mauka brush fire are continuing and the conditions are stable at this time. Crews will be on scene throughout the night and continue mop-up operations Friday.
