After one of their best first half performances of the season, the University of Hawaii at Hilo let it slip away in the second half in a 63-55 loss to Hawaii Pacific University in a Pacific West Conference match in the UHH gymnasium.
The Vulcans fall to 4-12 overall and 1-4 in the PacWest while the Sea Warriors are 9-4 overall and 5-0 in the PacWest.
Winning the first half’s battle on the boards (21-15) and hitting four 3-pointers, gave the Vulcans a 31-28 advantage at the break. But after the break, the Sea Warriors out-rebounded the Vulcans 29-16 while the Vulcans hit just 8 of 32 (25 percent) shots from the field.
“I think we just relaxed and became complacent,” UHH head coach Daphne Honma said. “We jumped out to a pretty good lead. We mentally let down a little bit and it’s tough to get back into it.
“It was the best first half and the first time they strung together back-to-back good games.”
Kirsty Imai hit three 3-pointers to lead the Vulcans with 15 points. Amanda Muller added 13 points and Hina Kimitete had 11.
