Good afternoon this is fire chief Darryl Oliveira with a brush fire update for Friday January 15 at 4 p.m. The fire fighting operations on the Kealakekua Mauka brush fire were continued today and fire fighting personnel will be on scene throughout the night. Significant progress has been made and current operations are focused on mop up activities with hot spots and smoldering fires. Very little active fire activity has been reported and the hazard and risk associated with this fire has been greatly reduced. With the marked improvements resources from the State Division of Forestry and Wildlife have been released. Fire fighters of the Hawaii Fire Department and personnel of Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate will continue the operations tonight and tomorrow. Smoke conditions have been reported as moderate at the fire site. Residents have reported lighter smoke conditions and some relief however conditions could vary depending upon the wind and weather patterns. Again the fire fighting operations on the Kealakekua Mauka brush fire continue and the efforts have been focused on mop up and extinguishment of hot spots and smoldering fires. Improvements and progress has been made and is expected to continue. I would like to once again thank all of the agencies and organizations for their help and assistance and thank the community for your support and understanding.
