High surf warning spurs beach park closures in West Hawaii

This is a Civil Defense message.

This is a high surf update for Wednesday January 6th. A high surf warning continues for the west facing shores of the Big Island. The Ocean Safety Division reports the closure of Kahaluu Beach Park, Laaloa Beach Park, Hookena Beach Park and Milolii Beach Park in Kona due to dangerous surf conditions.

Hapuna Beach Park in South Kohala is also closed. Other reported beach closures include Kukio, Mauna Kea, Ooma, Kohanaiki and Maumae Beach. The high surf warning is expected to remain in effect until 6:00PM Thursday evening.

SURF ALONG NORTH FACING SHORES OF OAHU MOLOKAI AND MAUI WILL BE 25 TO 35 FEET TODAY.

SURF ALONG WEST FACING SHORES OF OAHU MOLOKAI LANAI KAHOOLAWE AND THE BIG ISLAND WILL BE 15 TO 20 FEET TODAY.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A HIGH SURF WARNING INDICATES THAT DANGEROUS…BATTERING WAVES WILL POUND THE SHORELINE. THIS WILL RESULT IN VERY DANGEROUS SWIMMING CONDITIONS…AND DEADLY RIP CURRENTS.
