Fire damages Hilo apartment on Ululani Street

Fire/rescue personnel responded to a 1:54 p.m. alarm Tuesday (Jan 5) for an apartment fire at 270 Ululani Street in Hilo.

Upon arrival firefighters saw flames through a living room window of the apartment and used fire hoses to douse the blaze. Rescue crews searched the apartment for residents but found the unit unoccupied. The fire was confined to the living room area but heat and smoke damaged the rest of the apartment.

Ululani Street was blocked during the blaze with traffic being re-routed to Ponohawai and Haili streets. No injuries were reported in the fire and damage was estimated to be $3,000 to property and $5,000 to the structure.

The cause of the blaze was related to a lit cigarette.
