Crews still fighting Hokukano blaze

Karin Stanton | Hawaii 24/7 Contributing Editor

Fire crews continued Monday trying to knock down the stubborn brush fire above Konawaena High School.

The blaze, reported early Thursday afternoon, was fully contained by Saturday, but still is not extinguished, Fire Department officials said.

Crews were expected to stay on scene overnight again, working on hot spots and areas where the fire has spread underground into tree roots.

About 1,400 acres of Hokukano Ranch, about six miles above the high school,  has been scorched.

Sunday’s rainstorm helped soak the ground cover and helped ensure the fire would not spread within the firebreak.

Despite working for days on rough and wild terrain, no injuries have been reported among the firefighters.
