Saturday evening Konawaena fire update

The Fire Department reports no change – the blaze is 100 percent contained within the fire break and crews will continue the fight overnight.

9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19: Fire Department personnel report they have fully contained a wildfire above Konawaena High School.

No property was threatened and no injuries were reported.

The fire, first reported shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday, has scorched 1,400 acres of Hokukano Ranch pasture land about six miles mauka of the high school at about the 4,500 foot elevation.

By daybreak Saturday, bolldozer crews had a fire break 100 percent carved around the fire, and were ready to spend the day fighting the blaze within the containment area.

Personnel included about 50 firefighters and community volunteers, tanker, brush truck, two utility vehicles, both county helicopters, and three privately owned bulldozers and three privately owned water tankers.

Officials warned smoke would contain to waft over neighboring communities.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
