Credit union wins family friendly business award

MEDIA RELEASE

Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union has been recognized by the State Commission on Fatherhood as the state of Hawaii’s 2009 Outstanding Parent Friendly Business.

The credit union was awarded this honor Oct. 29 at the Children and Youth Advocate Luncheon on Oahu.

Hawaii’s Outstanding Family-Friendly Business Award was established by the Legislature in 2003 to recognize businesses with family-friendly policies. Hawaii Community FCU received a plaque and a signed certificate from the Legislature at the luncheon.

The credit union was nominated by one of its employees and the nomination lauded the organization for its work place policies and benefits that support parents/families.

According to the nomination, Hawaii Community FCU’s philosophy of “People Helping People” is the foundation for the financial institution’s dedication in supporting its employees and their families.

Time off to attend school events, social events for families, an employee assistance program, an education assistance program and generous health care and insurance assistance were among the practices outlined in the nomination.

The nomination also made it clear that Hawaii Community FCU’s policies are flexible and tailored to assist employees through personal crises.

Michael Asam, President/CEO of Hawaii Community FCU, said, “this honor was particularly meaningful because it came from the credit union employees; it is a clear message that a business that treats its employees like ohana, that provides them the tools and support they need to enrich their lives, will be rewarded over and over again.”

The nomination pointed out that “during these challenging economic times Hawaii Community FCU took cost-cutting measures to maintain and sustain stability. However, the parent-friendly benefits for the employees were never reduced or discontinued.”

The nomination included two examples of employees who found themselves in personal crisis and were supported and sustained through the ordeal by Hawaii Community FCU and its staff. One of the employees has been with the credit union for 25 years, the other for more than 36 years.

Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union has been serving its members for 73 years. It is a not-for-profit financial institution, wholly owned by its nearly 37,000 members, with branches in Kealakekua, Kailua-Kona, Kaloko, Kohala and Honokaa.
