Kona teen nabbed for month-long crime spree

Police have arrested a 19-year-old Kona man for 17 offenses in connection with a series of crimes in the Kailua-Kona area during October and November.

Detectives in the Area II Criminal Investigations Section have confirmed that between Oct. 14 and Nov. 14, Justin M. J. Gryde was responsible for entering at least four homes and one business in the Kailua-Kona area.

In some instances, vehicle keys were taken from the homes and the vehicles were subsequently stolen.

Gryde’s crime spree also included breaking into vehicles and stealing mopeds.

Police have recovered all of the vehicles and mopeds, along with two personal credit cards, jewelry, a retired police officer’s retirement badge and a large number of keys to houses, condominiums and cars.

Gryde was charged with four counts of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, three counts of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, five counts of residential burglary, one count of commercial burglary, one count of possessing personal/confidential information and three counts of second-degree theft.

His bail has been set at $50,000. He remains at the Kealakehe police cellblock pending his initial court appearance.
