New farmers market opening in Upper Puna

MEDIA RELEASE

Plans are underway to establish a new farmer’s market Saturdays in Mountain View at the Hilo Coffee Mill.

The new “Market at the Mill” will be at the Hilo Coffee Mill farm and is scheduled to start Sat., Dec. 5 –  a significant convenience for residents of and visitors to the agriculturally rich Puna District.

The market will feature Hawaii grown fruits, vegetables, flowers and other Hawaii-grown farm and value-added products.

“We want to showcase locally grown items and give our local farming community another revenue stream especially in these economic times,” said Jeanette Baysa, co-owner of Hilo Coffee Mill. “In addition, it promotes the purchase of locally grown items and sustainable agriculture.

Baysa also said having a market in Upper Puna/Mountain View area can help residents save money on gas, groceries and entertainment and will help build community spirit.

Market days are initially scheduled for Saturdays. Hours are tentatively set for 7 a.m.–noon.

Vendor space is limited. Anyone interested in participating may call Baysa or Kathy Patton at 968-1333.

Hilo Coffee Mill is on Highway 11, midway between Hilo and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
