Kona Brewing Co. percolates ‘Da Grind Buzz’ with Kona coffee

Kona Brewing Co.’s Kailua-Kona Brewery & Pub will celebrate the annual coffee harvest with the tapping of a seasonal beer, Da Grind Buzz Kona Coffee Imperial Stout, at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6.

The beer tapping, which coincides with the kick-off of the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival, includes sampling the Kona coffee stout and talking story with the brewers who crafted it.

The beer will be available at several Kona Coffee Cultural Festival events, as well as at Kona Brewing Company’s pubs while supplies last.

Da Grind Buzz Kona Coffee Imperial Stout is an assertive, rich and hearty dark stout complemented by freshly roasted 100 percent Kona coffee. The stout style is a Russian Imperial stout, historically brewed strong to survive its long voyage from London to the Baltic region. Freshly roasted coarse ground 100 percent Kona coffee beans were added to the brew during the aging process.

The beans were grown, harvested and roasted by Cornwell Estate in Holualoa, just 15 minutes from the brewery, and lend a distinctive roasted coffee aroma to the brew.

Kona Brewing Company also crafts a fall/ winter seasonal brew Pipeline Porter made with 100% Kona coffee. In making the two beers, the brewery purchases more than 4,000 pounds of coffee from Cornwell Estate each year.

Kona Brewing Company was started in the spring of 1994 by a father-and-son team that had a dream to create fresh, local island brews made with spirit, passion and quality. It is a Hawaii-born and Hawaii-based craft brewery that prides itself on brewing the freshest beer of exceptional quality, closest to market to minimize its carbon footprint.

The company, born and headquartered in Kailua-Kona, has grown into Hawaii’s largest brewery, has three restaurant sites and beer distribution reaching 28 states and Japan.

In 2008, Kona Brewing Company posted 51 percent growth over the previous year, making it the 14th largest craft brewery and the fastest growing top-50 craft brewery in the country.
