Waimea Middle School Will Be Open As Usual on

Friday, Oct. 23 & 30 and All Furlough Fridays This School Year

As the state’s first public conversion charter school, Waimea Middle School will be open as usual on Friday, Oct. 23 and 30 – and all of the DOE’s Furlough Fridays this school year.

Breakfast and lunch will be available as usual in the school cafeteria and there will be bus service. A special Furlough Friday bus schedule has been sent home to families. If families are unsure about bus pickup times, please call 937-2833.

Attendance at school is extremely important every day and all students are expected to attend unless they are ill.

FYI – Waimea Elementary School will be closed on Furlough Fridays.

There are several low-cost, free and other programs available in the community to provide child care for working families on Furlough Fridays. (This is not a complete summary of options nor an endorsement.)

Hawai’i County Parks & Rec-Sponsored ‘Furlough Friday’ Childcare:

County P&R staff will provide low-cost child care during the 17 days that regular DOE schools will be closed for teacher furloughs. Fee: $6/child/day or $12 per family if more than one child. Families must pre-pay for all 17 days in cash or with a certified check or money order. Program will run from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with organized activities from 8-3. Must bring lunch. Space limited; first-come; call between 12:15 and 5 p.m. to the following in North Hawai’i:

Free ‘Furlough Friday Ministry At Waimea New Hope Christian FellowshIP:

7:30 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. (Actual program from 8-3 and there is a charge if children are not picked up by 3:15 p.m.). Must bring lunch; mid-day snacks provided. Includes Bible Lessons, “Brain Gym,” Scripture art, music, crafts, devotions, PE, Study Hall/Homework and time to play. Info: 885-5510 or email Office@NewHopeWaimea.org Space limited and first come. ‘Furlough Fridays’ Fall Writing & Yoga Workshop For Grade 3-5:

11/6 & 20, 12/4,11 & 18, 2009 (5 sessions) at Anjalisa Aitken’s Yoga Studio in Waimea. Combines a review of Language Arts basics (grammar, punctuation, cursive, penmanship, and more) in the morning, followed by afternoon Yoga with teacher Anjalisa Aitken, who will loosen and lighten students’ bodies to help increase their focus, and then help them explore adventures in writing (journaling and creative writing), followed by writing games. Families may opt for a full day ($150 for all 5 days from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) or a half day ($75 for all 5 half-days from 9 a.m. to Noon, or Noon to 3 p.m.).
