They came away with a loss in their second consecutive 110-minute game, yet the University of Hawaii at Hilo women’s program is headed in the right direction.
UHH (3-5-2 overall, 2-2-1 Pacific West Conference) fell in double-overtime 2-1 to Dixie State College (5-3, 5-0) in St. George, Utah.
“I feel better about this loss than our tie in our last game,†UHH head coach Cam Camarena said. “Today, we left everything on the field. It was an amazing game. I thought we were a different team. I was so proud and impressed by the way they played. They played 110 minutes of the most intense and committed brand of soccer.
“It was just a very good and entertaining game.â€
DSC took the lead just seconds into the second half. The Vulcans, who were credited with just four shots, sent the game into overtime with just two-minutes remaining in the regulation.
“Gina [Tumasone] had a breakaway one-on-one and the defender just took her out,†Camarena said. “Emily [Lambert] made a great penalty shot.â€
Defense has been a mainstay of the program and it proved it once again.
“Jolene Crook marked their best player and took her out of the game,†Camarena said. “*Kelly Parker* played awesome. The defense was just incredible.â€
It took time but Camarena’s offense is beginning to show signs of life.
“Chelsea Gomez had a breakaway, one-on-one with the goalie,†Camarena said. “She was in the box, kicked it and hit the post. It went across the mouth of the goal but didn’t go in.
“Another time we took four over five shots but couldn’t get it in.â€
