Vulcans to play home games on campus court

Building the University of Hawaii at Hilo collegiate athletic atmospheres begins this season as home basketball games will be played in the UHH gym.

“It makes sense to build your home where your house is,” UHH athletic director Dexter Irvin said. “Our teams practice in our gyms. Why not play there and invite our friends into our facility?”

The UHH gym seats nearly 1000, has ample parking and is within walking distance for the 600+ students in the residence halls.

“Students are the sixth-man of the college game,” Irvin said. “The people in the stands won’t just be the crowd. They will become a big part of our teams.

“We’re going to fill up the gym and create a home-court advantage that other programs will envy.”

The men’s pre-Pacific West Conference home schedule includes 7:30 p.m. games against Western New Mexico University (Nov. 25 and 27), Champion Baptist University (Dec. 14-15), Grace Bible College (Dec. 22) and Gustavus Adolphus College (Dec. 30).

The women’s pre-PacWest schedule has the Vulcan facing Brigham Young University-Hawaii (Dec. 18) and Hawaii Pacific University (Dec. 21).

PacWest games for both men and women begin on January 16 when they host BYU-Hawaii. The home season includes Hawaii Pacific (Jan. 18), Academy of the Art University (Feb. 1), Notre Dame de Namur University (Jan. 7), Dominican University (Feb. 12), Dixie State College (Feb. 14), Grand Canyon University (Feb. 20) and Chaminade University (Feb. 27).

Season ticket renewals begin on Monday, October 12 and end on Friday, October 30. General sales are from Monday, November 2 through Monday, November 30.

Prices are $130 for reserved seating and $95 for general admission. Daily prices are $10 (reserved), $8 (adult general admission), $6 (senior 55+ general admission) and $4 (students 12+ general admission).
