October 4-10 proclaimed Fire Prevention Week

MEDIA RELEASE

PROCLAMATION

Each year, approximately 3,000 people die as a result of home fires and burns, and more than 200,000 individuals are treated for burn injuries in emergency rooms throughout the nation. Many burns come from exposure to fire and can result in serious scarring or even death. However, these injuries can be prevented if we take the necessary precautions to keep our homes safe.

Fire is a serious safety concern for everyone, and the National Fire Protection Association estimates that in 2007, 84 percent of fire deaths resulted from home fires. Cooking is the leading cause of home fire injuries, while heating equipment and smoking are responsible for most home fire deaths.

While Hawai‘i’s brave firefighters are well trained and equipped to handle emergency situations, residents can assist fire prevention efforts through fire safety education. Adults should always pay attention to what they are cooking, turn off the stove when it is not in use, keep hot foods and liquids away from tables and counter edges and have a “kid-free” zone around major heat sources. Our keiki can also contribute by being aware of their surroundings and never playing with matches. Families can also work together to make sure electrical cords are not damaged, test smoke alarms and plan and practice an escape route.

Each October, the National Fire Protection Association observes Fire Prevention Week to promote fire safety education and to reduce the occurrence of fires in homes. This year’s theme, “Stay Fire Smart! Don’t Get Burned!” focuses on preventing injuries, especially burns, while keeping homes safe from fire.

THEREFORE, I, LINDA LINGLE, Governor, and I, James R. “Duke” Aiona, Jr., Lieutenant Governor of the State of Hawai‘i, do hereby proclaim October 4 – 10, 2009, as

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

in Hawai‘i, and encourage all of our citizens to keep their homes safe by planning and practicing fire safety precautions.

DONE at the State Capitol, in the Executive Chambers, Honolulu, State of Hawai‘i, this second day of October 2009.
