MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island, it is time to get out those shoe boxes you are keeping in your closets!

Operationa-Christmas-ChildWhat? No shoebox? No problem! The Big Island Operation Christmas Child Team will be at Hilo Missionary Church with 5,000 shoe boxes!! Let your friends, family, classmates, coworkers, boy scouts, teachers, seniors, and keiki know it is time to think about shoe boxes!

Please come to Hilo Missionary on Monday, September 28, 2009 from 3pm to 6pm to pick up a shoebox!

Operation Christmas Child is the world’s largest Christmas project! Last year the Big Island filled 4,303 boxes that went to hurting children around the world. The boxes traveled by sea containers, trucks, trains, airplanes, helicopters, boats, camels, canoes, and even dog sleds!! It is the power of a simple gift that allows Operation Christmas Child to transcend all barriers –language, cultural, religious, geographical and political- with a message of hope and love.

OCC is a project that uses simple gift filled shoe boxes to let hurting children know that they are loved and not forgotten. For many of these children, the simple shoe box will be the first gift they have ever received. The boxes go to victims of wars, disasters, and persecution. The boxes are delivered to children living on garbage heaps, in slums, hospitals and in orphanages and even prisons!

OCCWallpaper02Packing a shoebox is rewarding and fun. It is a small act of kindness that will mean SO much to a child in desperate need. You can start with school supplies, and simple things like soap and a wash cloth.

I like to put a stuffed animal, crayons, paper, and a small first aid kit in all the shoeboxes I pack. My 13 year old son likes to include a flashlight with batteries in the boxes he packs. My ten year old daughter always packs some pretty costume jewelry in her boxes. We love to collect things year round, whenever there is a good sale. For more information on how to pack a box, come to Hilo Missionary September, 28th or to the County Fair to our booth September 17- 20th this month, or check out the website www.samaritanspurse.org

Locally, you can call Nell Quay (808)965-5028, Heather Rosario at (808)969-1953, or Sunny Petropoullakis at sunnypetro@yahoo.com
