HCFCU earns recognition for direct deposit program

MEDIA RELEASE

Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union has been recognized by the U.S. Department of the Treasury for its participation in the “Go Direct Community Ambassadors Program.”

The Credit Union began offering the “Go Direct” service to its members this year. In the last eight months 2,173 members have opted to enroll in the program that provides direct deposit of Social Security and other federal benefit payments.

Hawaii Community FCU has received a letter of commendation as well as a certificate of recognition from the Financial Management Services division of the U.S. Department of Treasury.

“Direct deposit is a simple and safe way for people to receive Social Security and other federal benefit payments,” said Michael Asam, President/CEO of Hawaii Community FCU. “‘Go Direct’ eliminates the risk of stolen checks; it reduces fraud and allows people immediate access to their money from almost anywhere. I believe that this direct deposit program offers peace of mind to senior citizens, people with disabilities and others who rely on federal benefits.”

There are currently more than 1,400 “Go Direct” partner organizations across the United States and since 2005, these organizations have helped “Go Direct” achieve more than three million enrollments in direct deposit.

These enrollments, according to the U.S. Department of Treasury, represent millions in savings to taxpayers by eliminating the need to print and mail checks to beneficiaries.

“Go Direct” also provides ‘green’ benefits; according to the Pay It Green Alliance, over the next decade 2 million direct deposit enrollments represent:

* 176 million pounds of greenhouse gas avoided

* 730,000 pounds of paper saved

* 7.4 million gallons of gasoline saved

* 174 million car miles not traveled

“The “Go Direct” program is just one more way Hawaii Community FCU can provide a needed service to its members while also benefiting the community and world,” Asam said.

A full-service financial institution, Hawaii Community FCU offers its more than 36,770 members complete checking and savings services; credit cards; auto, mortgage, construction, small business, educational and personal loans; investment services; money-saving programs, financial literacy presentations/seminars and more.

It also sponsors Student Credit Unions at Kealakehe, Kohala and Konawaena high schools and supports numerous Island of Hawaii programs and events.
