Armed robbery at ABC store in Kona Thursday

MEDIA RELEASE

Police are investigating an armed robbery at a Kailua-Kona convenience store Thursday morning (September 3).

Just after 8 a.m., a man entered the ABC Store in the Coconut Grove complex on Alii Drive, attacked a 68-year-old female cashier with a knife and demanded she open the cash register. The cashier was unable to open the register. The store manager, a 50-year-old Kailua-Kona man, threw another cash drawer onto the floor near the store’s exit.

The robber fled the store on foot with the cash drawer and headed south through the complex. He was last seen going into a driveway that leads to the Kamaaina Hale apartment complex on Kuakini Highway.

The cashier received minor injuries in the attack.

The robber was described as a thin local male in his early 20s with tan-to-dark skin and a mustache. He appeared to be 5-foot-8 to 6-feet tall and about 150 pounds. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, orange and green surf shorts with a floral print and a baseball cap that had a yellow and black bill visible from under the sweatshirt’s hood.

Police ask anyone with information about his identity or with any other information about the case call Detective Tyson Matsumura at 326-4646, Ext. 277, or the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 or 329-8181.
